Quick thought on D-Lowe in Dodgertown

Obviously, we all know Lowe signed with LA (the Dodgers, not the Angels of Anaheim). In another lukewarm offseason for LA, this is an awesome signing. This is why:

Lowe's ERA has been really high the last two years in Boston, but:
a) the stadium will be a better park for him to pitch in than Fenway.
b) more great defense in LA, as in Boston.
c) he'll reap the benefits of not having to face a DH, as he's not a power-pitcher.

Also, for money-motivated reasons, today's ballplayers often perform well after changing uniforms--even if it doesn't have pinstripes--at least for one season (see: R. Clemens). and Lowe proved in the postseason he's still "got it"--and now that we know he can perform under the most intense pressure (and the fact that he's changing coasts) the notion that he's a basket-case is long gone. If the Dodgers get to the playoffs, to quote D.C., he'll be HUGE!

My predictions for Lowe, taking all those factors into consideration, as well as the fact that he'll obviously have less run support: 14-16 wins, 3.60-3.90 ERA.

Other prediction: 4-6 wins and three months on the DL for fat-fuck Wells, but 15+ wins from Schilling and a Cy Young-caliber performance from Wade Miller...(har har)

you'd think the tall texan made that post. i'll take that bet about fat-ass though. he will win more than six games. the bet is your magazine against my tolerance for alcohol. no that's no good i don't really want your magazine. the bet is your life against mine. no that's no good either. okay if you win you get . . . this would be easier if either of us had anything.

Shaper: I don't what you mean by "lukewarm off-season" since it's been a barn burner of a hot stove. Besides losing Beltre, which admittedly wasn't fun at all, I like the pick-ups and our farm system is getting stocked with prospects. In fact, the rosters EQA is a solid 90+ at least, over last year, which can mean 6 more wins. A 99 win season? That'll win the NL West.
Also, Miller's a great pick-up for the Sox who look better than the Yankees. Of course, the Yankee's payroll is still bigger, but it looks like the "small market underdog" Sox are doing their best to fix that. Who gives an over-30 catcher that much money?
I was going to make a comment about how Ciatog lost his ability to be brief, but this has been rather long winded.

"Or El Dudarino if you're not into the whole brevity thing..."

Texan : Tek is not your average over-30 catcher. Many catchers, even great ones, begin a decline after 30, but Tek's offensive stats are getting better. And let's not forget Big Belli catches every fifth day.

And I don't know what you're basing the "sox look better than the yankees" statement on. The yankees have the best staff in baseball by far, the only thing holding them down is the fact that they suck. They'll still win the division like they do every year. Let's put it this way : the Braves had 96 wins and took the division last year with Wright as their best starter. He's now the Yankees fifth starter. That is what we call madness.

Hey, if you want to call the Yankees incredible, that's your gay sentiment. I think the Red Sox improved their rotation and will score more runs than they did last year. The '05 Sox are better than the '04 Sox. The '04 Sox won the Series, not the Yankees. Therefore, the '05 Sox look better than the Yankees. Even your championship gloating is half-assed.

Hey, did both of you let your editorial dials get stuck on "hyperbole"??

First, I'll retract my statement that the Dodger's offseason was "lukewarm," but a barn burner? Let's think about this. I'll bet the Dodgers do indeed have a great shot to win their division, but it's going to be as much of a squeaker as last year. Their big signings are: JD Drew, overrated, unreliable, and one of the three most overpayed guys this offseason; and Valentin and Kent, who will make up one of the oldest middle-infield in baseball. Even if Kent hits like he did last year, he doesn't even come close to filling the shoes of the new Mariner Moose. Oh, and their new staff ace was a number three pitcher on the Sox. I still think he'll do well, but the Dodgers are going to need strong contributions from starters 1-5 for a whole season, much like the mid- to late-'70s Red Sox teams, as neither have/had a definitive "ace."

Also, Tek is worth every dollar. Best catcher in baseball--yes, even better than Lo Duca, who reupped w/ the Marlins. And EQA? What the fuck is this, baseball prospectus?

The Yanks aren't incredible. Vazquez and Brown were ten times the pitchers Pavano and Wright are when they came to town--oh yeah, and Loaiza, who just came off a 20-win year. Pavano will probably get eat alive in the AL. Wright? There's no "probably" about it. And RJ, big fucking deal. So the Yanks have a decent shot to win one game in the ALDS.

The Sox are gonna score a ton of runs this year. Their pitching staff is suspect and we all know it. It's anyone's guess as to how guys like Miller, Clement, Halama, and fat-ass will hold up. They could be great or a collective bust. At least the Sox have a whole bunch of guys to put through the wringer. Should be interesting, at least.

The term barn burner refers to the amount of action that has taken place, which is quite a bit.

To assume that Tek will not suffer a rapid decline is to ignore the simple fact that of all positions, catchers bring the most risk. Tek is a fantastic catcher, and of course he's better than LoDuca (I never said he wasn't) but his offensive stats are slightly inflated due to his particularly apt pairing with Fenway. My only point was that the Sox spent a lot of money on a 30+ catcher which they can do because they have the second largest payroll in baseball.

As far as the Dodgers are concerned, Kent & Valentin aren't the middle infield as Valentin is playing third. By the way, both of their UZRs are better than average. And Kent doesn't have to replace Beltre; the 2005 lineup has to improve overall on the 2004 lineup. JD Drew is overpaid, which like the Sox, is a fact of being in a top tier market. And Lowe won't be the ace...Penny (if he's healthy) or Perez (if he's sane) will be.

What's wrong with BP? Do you drink a lot of Hateroade? Are your jock sensebilities threatened, Mr. Moustache?
Finally, me mule wouldn't walk in the mud, so I had to put seventeen bullets in her.
